From what you've said, I don't think an alignment is going to take care of the problems. At almost 300,000 miles, parts wear out, bushings go bad, and that allows the suspension parts to wobble around and do stuff they shouldn't normally do. I know money is tight, but take the car to a place that does front end work, and have them take a look at it. They can give you a list of what's wrong, and what they would normally charge to fix it.Is there a high school or college nearby that has auto shop classes? Get in touch with the instructor, and see if they would do the work. It might only cost you the cost of the parts.On the air filter/power stee! ring thing, the only thing I can think of is that a power steering hose was pinched/bent/had a blockage, and somehow when you replaced the air filter, it unpinched/unbent/unblocked it.
