Terrell Voltz: Eight channels would be 7.1 which is a common format these days. Make sure you get a receiver that will decode DTS as well as Dolby Digital. I would look at an Onkyo or Denon. Yes, optical will carry all eight channels. You shouldn't have too much trouble staying within you budget although you haven't mentioned anything about speakers...
Inez Relihan: Yes a digital optical cable is what your need. It will carry as many channels as your receiver puts out. I would recomend Sony receivers. I have one hooked up to JBL speakers and it sounds awesome. I picked it up at Best Buy for 200.00 dollars. Its actually a 6.1 with the .1 being the subwoofer output.
