Could a storewide remodel be releasing formaldehyde into the air? (10 POINTS IF ANSWERED CORRECTLY)?

Danyell Rowback: Typical alarmist; they are everywhere.

Marcel Then: Formaldehyde is a toxic material that can do more damage besides the mentioned above. When breathed in for longer periods, it can do lung damage, brain damage, and cancer. Stay away from it.

Ervin Overbee: Formaldehyde was common in compressed wood products, particle board, etc. It is in the adhesive the holds it together. When remodeling a trailer house, it was all over, because that was what the whole house was made of. I'm not sure, but I'd go out on a limb and say that it could be the cause of some of the health concerns that you mentioned, but also the psychology of the "fear," or worry and concern of getting sick from something 'potentially' harmful can cause you even worse physical and psychological symptoms. I would ask some co-workers how they have felt. Here's a link to the EPA's site on formaldehyde: http://www.epa.gov/iaq/formalde.htmlhope this helps, and don't worry too much- t! his will be limited exposure for you...Show more

Imogene Neiswander: Yes formaldehyde is a legitimate concern. Fortunately, testing the formaldehyde in your work place is easy and inexpensive. ACS badges dot com / formaldehyde dot shtml and $39 is all you need. This is a passive badge that simply needs to be exposed to the air for 24-hours returned to it container and mailed to the lab for analysis. Formaldehyde in homes is a bigger issue than workplaces because commercial buildings are required to have a complete air exchange each hour opposed to homes that didn't have any requirement until this year and now they can take 3-hours for one air exchange. The next issue is what is acceptable. State of California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessments wants no more than 7 ppb for homes. Occupational standards are significantly higher. The badge gives you a 24-hour average that will be about half the 8-hour concentration. I would be concerned about a 24-h! our average concentration of 25+ ppb. This is because I have ! seen lots of people reporting significant negative health effects with a 8-hour peak concentration of 50 ppb. The infamous FEMA trailers had a typical 24-hour concentration of 77 ppb....Show more
